Desdemona assures Cassio that she will do everything she can for him, with Emilia remarking on the interest Iago is taking in his case. Othello and Iago see Cassio leaving and Iago tries to raise Othello's suspicions, but Desdemona openly admits to talking to Cassio and is persistent in her suit for his reinstatement and Othello bids her farewell in playful mood as she exits. In the remarkable piece of theatre that follows, within 380 lines (perhaps less half an hour of stage time) Iago has convinced Othello of Desdemona's infidelity and the scene ends with Iago pledging to assist Othello in the murder of Cassio and Desdemona.
